Coinbase Writes Over 95% of Total Code with AI... A Major Shift in the Engineering Paradigm

Coinbase has set a new milestone in software development by generating over 95% of its total code using artificial intelligence (AI). Under the strong leadership of CEO Brian Armstrong, Coinbase is transforming into an organization centered on 'super builders' who focus on strategy and judgment beyond simple coding.

On July 14, 2026, Coinbase reached a significant turning point in the history of software engineering. Rob Witoff of Coinbase officially confirmed that more than 95% of the company's total code is currently being written with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). This is the result of an internal innovation that goes beyond simple tool adoption, redefining the role of developers from passive coders to strategists with high agency.

This achievement is evaluated as the fruit of the 'AI-first' engineering culture led by CEO Brian Armstrong. Through AI, Coinbase has maximized execution speed while building an environment where human developers can focus on high-level design and architectural oversight. These changes signal a fundamental shift in software development methods across the tech industry.

Rob Witoff emphasized that while AI is rapidly taking over the realm of execution, human judgment and strategy formulation remain essential. He explained that the combination of AI tools and smaller, flatter teams is fundamentally changing how companies are built and operated. This signifies a shift from development processes that previously required large workforces to a structure where a small elite team controls the process using AI.

Jack Dorsey evaluated this trend, stating that the use of intelligent tools is maximizing team efficiency. Through his social media, he mentioned that cases like Coinbase will become the new standard for corporate operations, adding that other cryptocurrency companies are also seeking to increase efficiency through AI adoption.

The intelligent tools we build and use, combined with smaller, flatter teams, are enabling a fundamental change in how we build and run companies.

Coinbase's automation journey progressed very rapidly. Less than a year after CEO Armstrong reported that AI-generated code accounted for 40% at the end of 2025, it reached a record-breaking 95%. This sharp upward curve exceeded the aggressive internal targets set by Coinbase.

Aggressive Moves Toward Automation and the Birth of 'Super Builders'

CEO Brian Armstrong has strongly demanded that engineers adopt AI tools and has maintained a firm stance on parting ways with personnel who resist change. He admitted to actually firing programmers who refused to use AI coding tools, emphasizing that embracing technological progress is directly linked to the company's survival. This high-intensity drive transformed the entire organization into a 'Super Builder' system.

  • Late 2025: Approximately 40% of daily production code is generated by AI
  • October 2025: Set a goal to achieve 50% AI-generated code
  • July 2026: Confirmed that more than 95% of all code is written with AI assistance

Coinbase engineers are now being called 'Super Builders' who deploy 10 times more code than in the past. Beyond simple syntax writing, AI has enabled a rapid iterative development environment called 'Vibe Coding.' Instead of typing code line by line, developers now manage the overall system flow and architecture while verifying the output generated by AI.

The achievements of AI adoption are spreading beyond the engineering department to overall operations. Coinbase has rebuilt almost all compliance workflows around AI agents. Through this, they achieved a reduction of approximately 90% in the time taken to resolve account restriction-related complaints, and as of May 2026, AI systems are internally handling about 55% of fraud cases in the United States.

However, there are significant concerns regarding security risks following such rapid speed increases. According to Sherlock Forensics' 2026 security report, at least one critical vulnerability was found in 92% of AI-generated codebases. The report warned that applications developed in a 'Vibe Coding' environment contain an average of 8.3 exploitable vulnerabilities, suggesting a need for balance between speed and security.

With 94% of tech companies currently using AI coding assistants, Coinbase's achievement of 95% is becoming a new benchmark for the industry. Statistics showing that 25% of Y Combinator's Winter 2025 batch startups are already generating 95% of their code with AI demonstrate that this trend is an unstoppable force.

Experts predict that by 2027, companies that fail to achieve AI-driven development speeds comparable to Coinbase will lose market competitiveness and become targets for major mergers and acquisitions. This case of Coinbase goes beyond a simple technical achievement, presenting a model for the operational efficiency and organizational culture that companies must possess to survive in the AI era.
