Mirae Asset Reborn as 'Digital X' After Korbit Acquisition... Dreaming of a Korean Robinhood
Mirae Asset Financial Group has acquired the virtual asset exchange Korbit and declared its transition into an integrated digital asset platform called 'Digital X.' This move aims to build an intelligent platform combining Real World Assets (RWA) and stablecoins, signaling a shift in the landscape of the domestic financial sector.
On July 24, 2026, the financial giant Mirae Asset Financial Group unveiled the blueprint for 'Digital X,' the new evolved form of the virtual asset exchange Korbit. This announcement follows the Fair Trade Commission's (FTC) approval of the Korbit acquisition on July 9, reflecting Mirae Asset's determination to go beyond simple market entry and redefine the virtual asset ecosystem. This is the first time a major financial group has directly acquired a domestic virtual asset exchange, signifying that the long-standing wall between traditional finance and the digital asset sector has begun to crumble.
Digital X will be the starting point of an ecosystem where Real World Assets (RWA), stablecoins, and traditional brokerage services are integrated into a single 'intelligent platform,' going beyond a simple exchange.
Mirae Asset plans to transform Korbit from a conventional virtual asset trading platform into an evolved intelligent platform. The core of this strategy lies in organically connecting traditional investment assets with the digital asset ecosystem. Through Digital X, investors will be able to manage and invest in not only virtual assets like Bitcoin but also tokenized Real World Assets (RWA) and stablecoin-based financial products in one place.
A Strategic Choice to Overcome Regulatory Barriers
For this acquisition, Mirae Asset Consulting was positioned as the acquiring entity rather than Mirae Asset Securities or the asset management firm to avoid regulatory risks. This is a sophisticated structural choice designed to comply with South Korea's principle of 'separation of finance and virtual assets' while securing substantial control. As a key entity in the group's governance structure, Mirae Asset Consulting has paved a way to enter the virtual asset business while bypassing the strict oversight of financial authorities regarding the separation of industrial and financial capital.
- Immediate acquisition of a highly scarce Virtual Asset Service Provider (VASP) license
- Absorption of a verified custody wallet system and security infrastructure
- Securing a low-cost funding source for the Individual Managed Account (IMA) business by utilizing Korbit's KRW deposits
- Establishing a foundation for the internalization of Bitcoin spot ETF custody and management for institutional investors
Mirae Asset's ultimate goal is to implement an integrated investment platform similar to the U.S.-based 'Robinhood' and a digital asset management model like 'BlackRock' in the Korean market. The strategy is to provide individual investors with a seamless investment experience covering stocks, bonds, and virtual assets, while strengthening market dominance by supplying tokenized funds and virtual asset-related ETP products to institutions. In particular, to respond to the 'era of productivity asymmetry' emphasized by Chairman Park Hyeon-joo, the company is positioning asset management services that combine AI and digital technology as the core competitiveness of Digital X.
However, such unconventional moves are still accompanied by regulatory uncertainty. This is because there is a precedent where authorities put the brakes on Dunamu, the operator of Upbit, when it attempted to acquire a securities firm, citing the principle of separation of banking and commerce. Even though Mirae Asset has adopted a structure using a consulting firm, if regulatory authorities judge this as a substantial encroachment of financial capital into the virtual asset market, the possibility of additional sanctions or increased surveillance during future business expansion cannot be ruled out.
Mirae Asset 3.0: The Fruits of a Multi-Year Digital Strategy
The acquisition of Korbit is part of the group's long-term roadmap named 'Mirae Asset 3.0.' Mirae Asset has gone through a systematic preparation process, starting with a review of the virtual asset custody business in 2022, the launch of a Bitcoin covered call ETF through its subsidiary Global X in June 2025, and the development of its own digital wallet in June 2026. This series of actions demonstrates a major turning point for the group as it attempts to improve its fundamental structure from capital-centered growth to technology and data-centered finance.
The major milestones related to digital assets that Mirae Asset has pursued over the past several years prove that the launch of Digital X is not an accidental investment, but a meticulously designed strategy. The roadmap below clearly shows how Mirae Asset has transplanted the strengths of traditional finance into the digital realm. Based on this foundation, Digital X is expected to present a new standard for the Korean financial market in the future.
Market attention is now focused on the amendment to the Capital Markets Act scheduled to take effect in February 2027 and the subsequent opening of the Security Token (ST) market. The key question is whether Korbit's market share, which is currently less than 1%, can break the duopoly centered on Upbit and Bithumb when combined with Mirae Asset's powerful brand influence. If the 'intelligent platform' vision presented by Digital X succeeds in winning the choice of actual investors, Korea will possess the most advanced form of an integrated digital financial ecosystem in the world.
