Fidelity Files for a Spot Ethereum ETF With Staking

Asset management giant Fidelity, with $4.5 trillion in assets under management, has submitted an S-1 form to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for a spot Ethereum ETF that includes a staking component. The official registration statement for the proposed Fidelity Ethereum Fund was filed on Wednesday.

The filing comes on the heels of the SEC approving the first Spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States earlier this year, with Fidelity being one of the initial 11 issuers. The launch of Spot Bitcoin ETFs has proven immensely successful for the digital asset market overall, leading many to predict that an Ethereum offering would follow suit.

The Fidelity Ethereum Fund plans to issue shares that will trade on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). Notably, the ETF will include staking, allowing investors to earn rewards for holding the asset.

Fidelity had originally filed for a Spot Ethereum ETF back in November 2022, joining other major firms like BlackRock, VanEck, and ARK Invest. However, the prospect of SEC approval for an Ethereum ETF remains uncertain amidst reports of the regulator questioning the security status of ETH.

Despite this, Grayscale's chief legal officer Craig Salm expressed confidence about impending approvals. He noted that the Spot Bitcoin ETF decision involved extensive vetting of issuers by both sides, suggesting the process for Ethereum should be less exhaustive since the only difference is the underlying asset.

The success of Spot Bitcoin ETFs, which saw BTC hit a new all-time high of $73,000 in March, has fueled optimism for continued growth in the digital asset space. Whether the SEC will greenlight Spot Ethereum ETFs and potentially spur a similar surge in ETH prices remains to be seen. The crypto community eagerly awaits the regulator's decision on Fidelity's proposed offering and its implications for Ethereum's future.
